Puppy's Troubling Habit of Picking Up Food Outside? 🐢 Is your dog well-behaved at home but turns a deaf ear to commands outdoors? Today, I want to share some tips on how to teach your dog not to eat randomly or pick up food from the ground.

Indoor Command to Stop Eating ❌

Training Method:

Step 1: Lead your dog to a slightly open, distraction-free area inside. Place a piece of dog food on the ground, and when your dog tries to eat it, push them away or cover the food with your hand while saying, "Don't eat." Keep doing this until your dog stops trying to eat the food on the ground. Then reward your dog by hand-feeding a piece from your hand, making them understand that food from your hand is okay to eat. Repeat this training until your dog no longer attempts to eat food placed on the ground or when hearing "Don't eat."

Step 2: Place 3-5 pieces of dog food on the ground while saying "Don't eat." If your dog follows the command, reward them. If not, repeat the first step.

Step 3: Increase the quantity to 10-15 pieces, throw them on the ground, and say "Don't eat." Reward appropriately.

Step 4: Walk your dog in a small area while occasionally throwing a piece of dog food on the ground. Repeat this 5-10 times before taking the training outdoors.

Outdoor Command to Stop Eating ❌

Training Method:

Step 1: Use food to review steps 1-3 from the indoor training session, rewarding promptly before moving on.

Step 2: Use random leaves as substitutes for food, toss them on the ground and say "Don't eat." Reward as necessary.

Step 3: Change up the training items to common outdoor objects like sticks, small stones, or trash.

Step 4: Extend the range of the walk, observe your dog to ensure they don't pick up things from the ground, and promptly correct them or reward them accordingly.

❗️ Training Tips:
✨ Don’t pick up the food from the ground and give it to your dog; it contradicts the training logic, "what's on the ground isn't for eating," and can confuse your dog.

✨ Stick to set commands; β€œDon’t eat” should always mean β€œDon’t eat.” Keep a consistent and firm tone during commands to help your dog differentiate between play and training.

Why do dogs eat their own poop? What should I do? πŸ’©πŸΆ

Robert Zhao

**🌻 Frequently hear pet owners say, β€œWhy does my dog always eat its own poop? Is it lacking trace elements?”** 🚩🚩 Especially for some small dogs, they just pooped with the front paws, and then sneakily eat it with the back paws. Initially, the owner doesn't see the poop and thinks the dog is constipated or eating less. Later, discovering this habit becomes unacceptable. In fact, there are various reasons for this phenomenon, and it might not just be the dog’s own issue but could also be caused by the owners. γ…€ βœ… **Nutritional Deficiency + Intestinal Absorption Problems** 🐢 🌾 Lack of trace elements (iron, copper, vitamin B), protein, digestive enzymes, etc., can cause dogs to eat poop. When these nutrients are not met for a long time, dogs instinctively seek them in different things, eating trash πŸ„, poop, grass πŸͺ΄, stones πŸͺ¨, furniture, etc., turning all these into their target food. γ…€ βœ… **Too Hungry** If you often forget to feed your dog 🍜, or there's no set feeding schedule, the dog might get too hungry at home and find nothing to eat 🍚, leading it to eat poop. Additionally, before the dog comes home, some pet shops/kennels may not feed the dogs regularly πŸ— (puppies need to be fed three or four times a day, but some places only feed once or twice at irregular times), causing the habit of eating poop to form from a young age, making it hard to change later. γ…€ βœ… **Owner's Scolding** πŸ₯’ Many new owners, especially girls, upon seeing the dog poop in the wrong place, drag the dog to the poop and scold it. This scares the dog, making it feel the need to destroy the evidence by eating the poop 🦴. γ…€ βœ… **Too Bored** Some dogs 🐢 stay at home all day with nothing to pass the time. Once they start playing with poop and get scolded by the owner, they realize this behavior grabs the owner's attention. Hence, they keep eating poop more for attention πŸ’₯. γ…€ βœ… **Undigested Food and Attractive Smell in the Poop** πŸ₯ͺ Many dogs eat heavily flavored, oily, and additive-rich human food πŸ›. When these get excreted, the poop still has undigested food and residual smells, attracting dogs to eat it πŸ₯©. γ…€ βœ… **Innate Behavior** Some dogs eat poop due to their natural instincts! 🦎 People often say, "A dog can't stop eating poop." Before domestication, dogs would destroy evidence to avoid predators, and mother dogs would often lick their puppies' excrement to teach them where to poop πŸƒ. γ…€ βœ… **Nutritional Deficiency** Usually, this is because the dog food lacks sufficient nutrients to meet the dog's growth needs, or there are parasites in the dog's stomach competing for nutrients, making the dog more interested in any edible items. γ…€ **Correct Ways to Stop Dogs from Eating Poop:** β• Catch them in the act and lightly tap them β• Spray chili water or mustard on poop, the dog will learn after being burned a few times β• Clean up promptly, start preparing to grab when you see the dog about to poop β• Supplement trace elements, provide proper nutrition, and feed on schedule β• Avoid feeding heavily flavored human food γ…€ If you really can't get rid of the habit, slowly accept it 🀣 γ…€ #DogCare #PetCare #PetKnowledge #DogEatingPoopWhatToDo
