**Two Key Points: Find Shade Immediately (Ventilated and Cool), Spray with Cool Water! (Not Ice Water!)**
**1. Find Shade**
Don't take your dog to a stuffy, non-ventilated, shaded area. Also, don't have a crowd gathered around.
Immediately carry your dog to a shady spot, lay it flat on the ground, and ensure there is good airflow around. Use fans, whatever works!
Make sure to keep the air circulating.
**2. Spray with Cool Water**
Use cool water or a towel/clothing soaked in cool water to wet areas like the belly, armpits, paws, and anus. These are the main areas where dogs release heat.
Do not use ice water! Ice water can cause your dog to go into shock from the extreme temperature change.
It will also constrict the blood vessels, restricting blood circulation and further preventing the body from releasing heat.
Extremely cold water can also stimulate your dog's muscles, causing them to cramp, which will make the situation even worse.
**3. Do Not Walk Your Dog When the Sun is High**
Heatstroke is one reason, but also, the concrete gets extremely hot under the sun and can burn and inflame your dog's paw pads.
Test by placing your hand on the ground. If you can't stand it for a few seconds, then don't take your dog out.
